Michigan-based YODAKA (Shoko Ishida) left the College for Creative Studies for mixed-media portraits that use shape and negative space. Penguin Random House, Erewhon Books and HarperCollins publish the pages. Music, fashion, nature, nostalgia and daydreams sit in the gaps; galleries have shown the work worldwide.

Shoko Ishida, known as YODAKA, is a Japanese illustrator and artist living in Michigan. She holds a BFA in Illustration from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. The portraits are delicate on purpose: shapes and negative space that leave room for you to enter.
Music, fashion, nature, nostalgia, and her own daydreams feed mixed-media pages for stories and galleries. Penguin Random House, Erewhon Books, and HarperCollins publish the work. For HarperCollins’ Quill Tree Books she illustrated Waka T. Brown’s The Very Unfortunate Wish of Melony Yoshimura. Her fairy-tale series includes a Princess Kaguya cover in gouache and ink, and Beauty and the Beast with a nod to the kabuki Kagami Jishi.
The Society of Illustrators showed her as a student in New York in 2016; Communication Arts put her in the Illustration Annual the same year. In 2020, Echoes, a combined solo at Outré Gallery in Melbourne, took the pictures abroad.
