About this artist
Paul Evans stands as one of Britain's most successful contemporary landscape painters, with a unique style honed over a prolific 45-year career. His work radiates an infectious joy derived from observing and learning directly from the natural world.
Born and raised in rural Sussex, Evans developed a profound, early passion for nature, greatly informed by his grandparents' intimate knowledge of the land. This instilled an insatiable curiosity about the countryside's birds, butterflies, and plants. A strong work ethic, inherited from his family and guided by his father's belief that "you only get out of life what you are prepared to put into it," has been foundational to his lifelong dedication to art.
He formally studied children's book illustration and printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art and Design under renowned artists Robert Tavener and Trevor Kemp, who provided significant inspiration. His professional practice began auspiciously while at college through an association with Brighton's Ralph Lewis Gallery, where his paintings sold rapidly, giving him the confidence to build a sustained living from his art. This success has continued unabated, marked by over 65 solo exhibitions and numerous group shows, with work often selling out within hours.
Evans works across a variety of media including watercolours, inks, acrylics, etchings, and linocuts. His subjects are the beloved landscapes of East Anglia, the Sussex Downs, the Kent Weald, and Cornwall, through which he captures the essence of place, time, season, and light. In addition to his gallery work, his paintings have been widely reproduced in over 500 commercial greetings cards, calendars, and limited edition prints by major publishers. His work is collected worldwide and he has consistently supported numerous charitable causes. Evans also established his own galleries, first in Alfriston and later the Lavenham Contemporary Gallery in Suffolk.
