About this artist

YooshiQ's Note
Richard Claremont is an Australian artist and educator, recognised as one of Australia's top 100 collectable artists. Born in Sydney in 1965, his creative foundation was shaped by his education at a Steiner School, an environment rich in Norse myths, ancient civilisations, and folk tales that fostered his early love for drawing and watercolour painting.
Alongside this narrative inspiration, Claremont developed a fascination for mechanical things, often drawing elaborate factory automation scenes. He pursued this passion formally by studying Visual Arts, completing a degree in painting at the Sydney College of the Arts from 1983 to 1985. His work from this period is semi-abstract, continuing to explore themes of mythology and humanity's relationship with the world.
His artistic journey took a distinctive turn in 1988 when he worked as a postman, a role that provided him with valuable time to contemplate and plan his paintings. This unique synthesis of daily work and art practice led to him being featured on television as the "Painting Postie," after he was discovered creating small oil studies on his mail route.
Today, Claremont is an award-winning artist and educator. He and his wife Kerrie conduct workshops globally and have produced popular online courses, such as "How To Loosen Up Your Painting." In 2020, he founded The Skilled Artist, an online art school that now connects a community of over 1500 students worldwide.
