Milagros Pico

Argentinian illustrator Milagros Pico, a recent addition to Brilliant Artists’ roster, builds pages where color and motion share a beat. Saturated hues, pop culture, and the day’s playlist sit in the same drawing, still tied to rooms you already know. The forms stay loose. “My drawings are 100% inspired by what I’m listening to,” she shares. Fiona Apple’s raw lyricism and Rosario Bléfari’s indie rhythms are not background. They are collaborators.

Rooted in Buenos Aires’ thriving artistic community, Pico draws inspiration from peers like Melisa Fernández Nitsche and Juan Pez, celebrating Argentina’s overflowing talent. This collective energy permeates her shared studio—a hub where camaraderie keeps the week moving, though she dreams of a larger space with workshops and, crucially, a nap-ready couch.

Embracing the two sides of the job, Pico lives with the uncertainty of making a picture, even when it gets in the way. To get past a block, she surrenders to instinct and fills pages without a plan. “I draw without direction,” she explains, later mining those raw sessions for hidden gems.

Her cinematic tastes—romantic comedies like My Best Friend’s Wedding, the melancholic whimsy of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind—hint at stories she would like to draw. She also wants to reimagine J.D. Salinger’s Franny and Zooey, a book she keeps close.

Pico’s wider view, sharpened during a 2023 trip to Berlin’s Pictoplasma Academy, sits beside local pride. The rituals stay small: shoes off, phone out of sight, a drink in hand—a quiet start before the color arrives.

When asked which artwork she would keep at home, she answers without hesitation: David Hockney, whose bold palettes mirror her own. As more people find the work, the dance between spontaneity and structure is still the method: one stroke, then the next. The nap couch is still on the wish list. The playlist is still the brief.
