Self-described as a practitioner of “Eurosurrealism” or “European classic surrealism,” Safonkin’s work is a haunting synthesis of myth, metaphysics, and hyper-detailed allegory—a testament to his belief that art must “transcend the mundane to touch the sublime.”

Safonkin’s ascent to international acclaim began in the early 2000s, culminating in a landmark 2005 exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels, where his canvases captivated audiences with their labyrinthine narratives and technical virtuosity. While Safonkin’s influences are global, his Russian roots subtly permeate his iconography—layers of frost-bitten melancholy and Byzantine intricacy temper his dreamscapes. Exhibitions in St. Petersburg’s Erarta Museum and inclusion in the International Surrealism Now touring collection underscore his dual resonance in Eastern and Western art circles.

Despite his reclusive reputation, Safonkin’s legacy grows quietly potent. His works, held in private collections from Moscow to Monaco, refuse categorization, challenging viewers to decode their encrypted truths.
