Yuji Moriguchi

Yuji Moriguchi paints Japanese nostalgia and eroticism in the same lamp-light: strong color, fine detail, and invented rooms that still feel like a street you could miss. The pictures know ukiyo-e and they know a Western way of looking. Neither one is costume. Modern culture, older myth, and a night you almost recognize share the board.

Set against the Showa era, the work stays with mystery, eroticism, and the supernatural. Each picture is a short story that asks you to step across the line between a real night and an invented one. A recurring figure is the femme fatale, who walks into an ordinary room and leaves it charged: femininity, desire, the otherworldly, and what you are not supposed to want.

Moriguchi's training began at Kyoto Seika University, in the manga department. That education is still in the page: the depth of a longer story packed into a single image. The work is a cultural conversation as much as a technique, a bridge between what a reader already knows and what the lamp will not explain. Past and present sit in one frame. The familiar street is allowed to go strange without a caption.

In a crowded field of contemporary pictures, Moriguchi keeps asking you into those rooms, and into themes that have held people for a long time. The work trusts that a picture can still move a feeling across a border without a speech. Look at the woman in the doorway first. Then notice the room was already waiting for her. Kyoto Seika is still in that wait: a manga page’s patience, used on a painting that has to hold the whole night at once.
