James Jean sets a figure inside a fable the way a scroll sets a journey: layer on layer, a fine repeating line, and a horizontal that keeps going. The comic jacket and the museum wall stay one picture, from the Fables covers and Rebus, through Trembled Blossoms for Prada, to Eternal Spiral in Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen, and Beijing.

About this artist
James Jean was born in Taipei in 1979 and completed a B.F.A. at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2001. The pictures treat a cover and a canvas as one surface. Figures are built up in layers, drawn with a fine repeating line, and set along the long horizontal of a handscroll. A face can sit inside a pattern. A body can read as both person and ornament.
From 2004 through 2008 he was named Best Cover Artist at the Eisner Awards each year, and he received the Harvey Award for Best Cover Artist in 2005, 2006, and 2007. The Fables jackets for DC/Vertigo were collected in 2008 as Fables: Covers by James Jean, with texts by Jean and by Bill Willingham. Gold medals from the Society of Illustrators, in Los Angeles in 2000 and in both New York and Los Angeles in 2007, belong to the same years of cover work. In 2008 he also received a Bronze Lion at the Cannes Lions Festival and a Grammy nomination for Best Packaging Design.
The sketchbooks make the method public. Process Recess was published by AdHouse in three volumes: the first in 2005, with a text by Paul Pope; the second in 2007; and The Hallowed Seam in 2009, with Jean's own text. Chronicle Books then issued Kindling (2009), Rift (2010), and Rebus (2011). Later monographs include Pareidolia (PIE Books, Tokyo, 2015), Xenograph (2015), and Azimuth (2018).
Solo exhibitions carry that line out of the book and onto the wall: Kindling at Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York (2009), Rebus at Martha Otero in Los Angeles (2011), Parallel Lives at Jack Tilton in New York (2013), Zugzwang at Hidari Zingaro in Tokyo (2015), and Azimuth at Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo (2018). Eternal Journey at the Lotte Museum of Art in Seoul (2019) opened a museum chapter that continued as Eternal Spiral, at the Modern Art Museum in Shanghai (2022), the A4 Art Museum in Chengdu and the Sea World Culture and Arts Center in Shenzhen (2023), and the Today Art Museum in Beijing (2024). Meadowlark, at the Center of International Contemporary Art in Vancouver, also opened in 2024. In 2025 his work was included in Ukiyo-e In Play at the Tokyo National Museum.
Fashion has been part of the studio. For Prada's spring/summer 2008 collection he made the animated film Trembled Blossoms, together with wallpaper and fabric prints. He returned for the Prada menswear spring/summer 2018 collection and the Resort 2018 collection. In 2021 he made a capsule collection with Yohji Yamamoto and work for the HOMME autumn/winter 2021-2022 collection. The pictures are held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the Lotte Museum of Art in Seoul, and Colección SOLO in Madrid.
