About this Artist

Mu Pan, a Taiwanese artist now rooted in New York City, is a storyteller of grand, chaotic narratives. Drawing from the vivid imagery of 1980s Hong Kong cinema, Japanese manga, and kaiju films, Mu weaves Chinese history and mythology into his work, reimagining ancient legends with a contemporary edge. Yet, he humbly describes himself as “just an otaku who draws,” a nod to his deeply personal and unpretentious approach to art.

War is Mu’s muse. To him, it is not merely destruction but a complex, almost poetic orchestration of human ingenuity. “War creates great characters and writes history,” he reflects. “It demands mastery of strategy, geography, economics, and even the art of persuasion. To unite individuals into a singular, formidable force—whether for invasion or defense—is a thing of beauty.” This fascination with conflict fuels his large-scale, battle-filled canvases, where history and mythology collide with modern-day events.

Mu’s creative process is as dynamic as his subjects. He eschews preliminary sketches, preferring to let each piece evolve organically, shaped by his daily emotions and experiences. “I let the piece flow with whatever is happening in my life,” he explains. This spontaneity infuses his work with raw energy, making each painting a living, breathing extension of his inner world.

At its core, Mu’s art is a cathartic exploration of power and primal instincts. “I worship the strength of men and animals,” he admits. “I dream of dominating power, of instilling fear in my enemies. But in today’s world, such power is impossible. So, I create my own world through my images.” In this realm, every monster he paints is a self-portrait, a manifestation of his desires, fears, and unspoken truths.

Mu Pan’s work is more than art—it is a visceral, unflinching reflection of humanity’s darkest and most compelling impulses, rendered with a masterful blend of tradition and modernity. Through his brush, war becomes not just a subject, but a stage for the eternal drama of human ambition and survival.
