YooshiQ's Note
John Walker’s work centers around telling stories, captivating audiences with imagined narratives and invented cultural artifacts. Drawing from a well of inspiration that includes antique pull toys, flora, fauna and vintage curiosities, Walker constructs a world that feels both foreign and intimately familiar. Born in Aurora, IL, the artist’s educational journey took him to the College of DuPage and the American Academy of Art in Chicago, after which he embarked on a fruitful career as an airbrush artist and illustrator.
His expertise in these areas is evident in his artwork, which often combines elements of realistic rendering, graphic design, stylization, and three-dimensional objects. In each of his works, Walker introduces viewers to a fantastical realm inhabited by a diverse array of characters. These chimerical beings, constructed from random spare bits and pieces both animal and inanimate, are as enchanting as any creature in a fairy tale. Their playful presence breathes life into his colourful, empty landscapes, inviting a sense of whimsy.
Walker’s style is at home within the realms of pop surrealism or new contemporary art. Many of his pieces showcase a streak of dark humour, further enriching the intriguing nature of his work. His art is an exploration of imagination and creativity, inviting viewers to engage with a world that transcends the mundane and celebrates the extraordinary. He has won numerous awards including Best in Show at the Richeson 75 International Portrait and Figure Competition and the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic Award at the 59th Annual NSPC&A Exhibit. His work has appeared in the AcrylicWorks Best of Acrylic Painting annuals, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine #39, Spectrum Art annual, Acrylic Artist magazine and the French contemporary art magazine Hey!. Whether through his detailed characters or the intricate landscapes they inhabit, Walker’s work continues to inspire wonder and curiosity in all those who view it.
